The Purple Sox have declined their finish of a $12MM mutual possibility for right-hander Liam Hendriks, studies Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The previous nearer will take a $2MM buyout and return to free company.
The choice doesn’t come as a shock, as Hendriks has hardly pitched over the previous three years. In 2023, a battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma stored him out of motion for some time. He finally gained that battle and was declared cancer-free, solely to require Tommy John surgical procedure after simply 5 innings pitched.
He reached free company going into 2024 and the Purple Sox signed him to a two-year cope with a $10MM assure. That took the type of a $2MM wage within the first 12 months, a $6MM wage within the second, adopted by the aforementioned possibility and buyout. The Sox knew they won’t get any contributions from Hendriks within the first 12 months however had been hoping their funding would repay within the second, with Hendriks ideally returning to his earlier elite nearer type.
It didn’t work out that approach. Hendriks missed all the 2024 season after which elbow issues lingered into the next 12 months. He spent most of 2025 on the injured record, solely throwing 13 2/3 innings. He underwent ulnar nerve transposition surgical procedure in September and has an unsure timeline.
Hendriks will presumably be centered on getting wholesome for some time. He’ll rejoice his thirty seventh birthday in February. He’ll be a candidate for an additional bounceback deal in some unspecified time in the future, although the form of that deal will depend on his future well being outlook.
