Final week the Portland Bureau of Transportation opened the SW 4th Avenue Enchancment Mission. It’s essentially the most substantial funding they’ve made within the bike community in a few years and it’s essentially the most formidable challenge but to return out of the 2018 Central Metropolis in Movement Plan.
Once we first started speaking about that plan in 2013, I mentioned it was a “golden alternative” that we couldn’t afford to move up. In fact, again then we had a downtown bicycling mode share of 11% (based on a survey from the Portland Metro Chamber). It seems like every part has modified previously 10 years, however our want for a high-quality, north-south bikeway and higher bus service on SW 4th remained. From what I’ve seen, skilled, and browse (from all of your messages), this new bikeway has lived as much as the hype.
On this video, you will note your entire facility from SW Caruthers to SW Taylor. What actually stands out to me — past the graceful new pavement and beneficiant width that allowed me and a good friend to trip and speak side-by-side with loads of room! — are the alerts. They’re all optimized for bike customers on a degree that’s very uncommon to see in the US. In just a few spots, a detector embedded within the pavement mid-block senses your presence and activates a flashing yellow warning mild.
PBOT simply raised the bar for what we will anticipate from bikeways in Portland. I’d like to know what you concentrate on it thus far!
